Teamwork makes a difference!
Lisa--Client Services Representative: I have been employed with Deer Run Animal Hospital since the doors first opened in September 2001. I was the practice manager until Sept. 2011 when a move with my family to a more distant Chicago suburb made the daily commute difficult. But I remain a proud staff member and continue to work part time on some weekends. My educational background consists of a B.S. degree major/Biology with a minor in Chemistry. In addition, I earned an A.A.S. degree and am a certified Medical Laboratory Technologist. I have two unique rescue cats that I have owned for many years, Tenacious and Guido.
I started working in the veterinary field during my college years when I met Dr. Jokela. I believed in Dr. Jokela's philosophy for practicing veterinary medicine, and followed her here to Deer Run. In my spare time I love to travel and entertain with family and friends.
Penny--Office and Client Services Manager: My husband, Ken and I moved to Indiana with our 4 girls in June of 2003. Growing up, like most of us, I always had a dog plus a cat or two. I have many fond childhood memories with them. We wanted our girls to also grow up with animals in our home. We currently have a Boxer, "Joe" who is 12 yrs old. Our newest addition, a stray kitty we named "Binx", is 3 yrs old.
I began working at Deer Run Animal Hospital in February 2005 as a Front Desk Receptionist. Being a busy mom, this fit our family schedule. By August 2006, with the practice continuing to grow and with college getting closer for our girls (Yikes!), I was offered a full time position. In April 2009 I became the Assistant Client Services Manager, and in the Fall of 2011 I became the Office and Client Services Manager. Every day continues to bring new and different learning experiences, it's never boring! I truly enjoy interacting with our clients and their pets, many of which have been with Deer Run longer than I have. My work has proven to be a very rewarding experience. My daughter Rachel, also joined the staff in April of 2009 as a Veterinary Assistant. Rachel has now moved on to be a proud member of the US Coast Guard!
Liz--Patient Care Coordinator and Senior Veterinary Assistant: I have worked at Deer Run Animal Hospital since February 2007. After graduating from Purdue University with a degree in Criminal Justice/Law and a minor in History, I began volunteering at the Humane Society, which eventually led to a job there. This awakened my passion for animal care. When an opening presented itself at Deer Run, I jumped at the chance! I am now learning to be a dog trainer here at Deer Run under the guidance of our Certified Pet Dog Trainer, Sherry.
In August of 2008 I opened my home and my heart to a rescue dog named "Finn" who is my baby doggie! "Finn" is a sharp looking Yellow Lab Mix! Supporting rescues and shelters is also a passion of mine. My other hobbies include traveling and camping. One of my goals is to visit all 50 states.
Beth--Senior Veterinary Assistant: I have always enjoyed working and spending time with animals. I worked at South Suburban Humane Society for three years and also worked at a pet boarding facility before joining Deer Run Animal Hospital in 2006. I am happy to gain the experience of working with animals in a hospital setting and join a team where everyone is committed to giving quality care.
I share my home with three great cats and have two sweet horses, Jet and Josie, in my barn. I believe that pets are a blessing and a part of the family. In my spare time, I love going to flea markets and resale shops looking for treasures and bargains. I also enjoy going to festivals and county fairs during the summer.
Chanell--Veterinary Assistant: I am currently a student at Purdue University Calumet, majoring in Biology. During my first two years as an undergrad attending Purdue University in West Lafayette, I had such a wonderful opportunity to be able to volunteer in Purdue's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. After caring for large animals and the clients in the oncology ward, I absolutely knew this field was my passion. From that point on I studied, and am continuing to study in the field of Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Biology. I decided to move back home and attend Purdue University Calumet during my junior year of school. I am extremely glad I came back home because shortly after I got home, I applied at Deer Run Animal Hospital and became a veterinary assistant during May 2010. I work part-time, but never take a minute of my time here for granted. I most enjoy the moments when I make eye contact with an animal I come across in the hospital and I see him/her looking back at me with appreciation, which is mutual.
In June 2009, I opened my home to a stray black and white kitten named "Bella". She is most definitely the baby in my house and gets her way whenever she sees to it. When she is not napping, I more than likely will find her sitting in the window trying to catch birds and squirrels passing by or even playing inside an empty cereal box. In the summer of 2002, my family and I rescued a black lab mix from the Hobart Humane Society. Her name is "Pez" and she enjoys going for long walks, rides, and eating carrots, which are her favorite treats. Some of my other interests include baking, traveling, and learning about sea turtles.
Carrie -- Veterinary Assistant
I have been with Deer Run Animal Hospital since September 2010. I've studied at Northern IL University and recieved my associates in Liberal Arts from Prairie State College in 2001. My husband and I are proud parents of three children and two dogs. We have a shepard mix, Lainey, who was adopted in 2003 and an American Bulldog named Gus McLovin, who was born in 2008. Our dogs are such a part of our lives, that our family would not be complete without them. I enjoy working hands on with the animals here at the animal hospital, and I am grateful to be part of this field. Outside of work I love spending time with my family and you can usually find me at one of the numerous sporting events that my children are involved in. I also enjoy scrapbooking and reading.
